Humour can be found in every situation, even in your darkest moments. I couldn't have been more sad at the funerals of each of my parents, but I made the effort to laugh and cheer others up at appropriate times through the day.

There are many different ways to laugh. Obviously I wasn't cracking jokes and expecting everyone to have a good time, but sharing a funny memory helped relieve the enormous sense of loss momentarily. When the sadness is so huge, laughing is a welcome release.

Dwelling on sad feelings only makes you feel worse. Crying is necessary to express your emotions, but I prefer to cry alone, and really let everything out. If you try to make others feel better by sharing humour, you feel better yourself.

Mixing with friends who share the same sense of humour is the best feeling ever. Not having to explain why you find something hilarious,  because you know they'll get it too, is an amazing connection.

Looking back and remembering the times you laughed out loud helps you through days which are proving a challenge. It's possible to change your perspective very quickly once you keep your eyes open for funny incidents in everyday situations.
