I choose to avoid watching the news on TV, because I know it's important to keep my mood up. I'm too sensitive to prevent myself from being affected by sadness and violence, but because of social media it creeps into my consciousness.
I am not callous and uncaring when I don't join in with messages of sympathy. Instead, I post images of love and hope.
It took time to be able to focus where I placed my attention, but it was essential. I would become depressed after each disaster, and I lived in fear of the future. That is not living!
Firstly, you have to focus on your own emotional well-being, or you can't be of any use to anyone else. When I read kind, loving words they lift my spirit, and make me want to share them with others, because I know they make a difference.
If we each focused on what makes us feel good, then we're able to focus on making others feel good. That is how change is made. Dwelling on cruelty and unjust actions only leads to a spiral of fear, which freezes you into inaction.
What choice do you make?
It is a choice every time something bad happens. Make the choice to focus on finding everything that makes you happier, until that is all you find. Skip past the posts where anyone is moaning or complaining, and only 'like' those that are positive and encouraging. The more often you do this, the easier it becomes, and more uplifting things will appear for you to maintain your focus.
It is not being hard-hearted to divert your attention away from violence - your soft and gentle heart is needed to focus on sharing love. That is the only way we'll win over fear.
