I say thanks numerous times a day for the gorgeous view from my flat, and feel extra special gratitude when there's a day like the one above in November. But winter in England is mostly cold and wet, so I have to make sure I still say thanks, anyway.
I didn't get here by being miserable thinking about everything that was wrong in my life - I had to change the way I looked at my situation. I had to make saying 'Thanks' as soon as I woke a daily habit. Not something I only remembered occasionally - every day.
I'm not a morning person, so 'Thanks' is easy to think of. You don't need complicated routines to change your life. When you keep things simple it's easier to keep them up.
It's what you do every day that creates your days.
When you first start saying 'Thanks' you might be like I was - stuck, with no clue how to escape. When you feel overwhelmed it's hard to see a clear path forward - I used to say I couldn't see the tunnel, never mind the light at the end of it! Poor jokes didn't help anything, but giving thanks for the smallest thing - no matter what - did.
It doesn't matter what situation you're in, only you can change it.
Once I stopped waiting for the help that was promised, but never materialized, and once I stopped feeling like a victim with so many taking advantage - and started to be responsible for how I felt, then things began to change.
I had to feel better first, before things around me improved.
There were seemingly endless challenges during the last year of finishing my house ready for sale, but I knew I had to maintain my focus to get where I needed to be. Keeping myself going in the right direction was my priority. I had to find things that made me feel good to take my attention away from all the things that were going badly.
Thanks is the beginning of feeling better, and it is enough.
Thanks becomes more than a word, more than a habit. It becomes how you look at your world. When you understand that feeling bad will never improve your situation, but when you look for things to feel grateful for - you change, and each day improves as you do.
It doesn't matter where you live, or how impossible your dream is (mine definitely was!), when you focus on finding things you love, that make you smile - you are lifting your soul to reach for your dream.
Don't think 'Thanks' is too simple. Thanks works.
The more often you give thanks, the more you open yourself up to finding beauty and connections that bring you closer to your dream.
Each day becomes easier when your heart feels lighter.
The more you focus on how you feel, the more you'll want to search out things that you love.
It's all about how you feel. Here. Now.
Start giving thanks, and never stop! Here are a few memories from the last 3 months, and I look forward to every day bringing many more.
I love finding quotes to lift me up, and Rumi is a favorite:
Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.
Hear blessings dropping their blossoms around you.
There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth.
Today, let us swim wildly, joyously in gratitude.
Gratitude is the wine for the soul. Go on. Get drunk.
