They're a great reminder to be grateful for everything we have, but if we waited to only give thanks once a year, we wouldn't have very much to be thankful for.
Not only saying thanks, but feeling a deep sense of gratitude is how you can raise your mood every day. As Abraham-Hicks say in the quote below: "Love and appreciation are identical vibrations".
When you aim to feel the best you possibly can, as often as you possibly can, the more life will reward you. This doesn't mean you have to go around laughing at anything and everything 24 / 7 - nobody feels that happy all the time - and you really wouldn't be much fun to be around!
Just keep tuned into how you feel, and the more connected you become with practice, the more quickly you can lift yourself up when you feel your energy take a dip. Living with this level of awareness means you actively search out the little things that bring you pleasure.
If you enjoy a favorite bar of chocolate - really enjoy it. Build a sense of excitement in anticipation of your treat, and feel special knowing you deserve it. Allow each bite to melt on your tongue, so you appreciate the texture, as well as the taste.
You will find you feel satisfied, and much happier, far sooner than if you ate the chocolate really fast before anyone sees you breaking your diet. Feeling guilty takes away the enjoyment you should be experiencing. Guilt is a wasted emotion - replace it with gratitude for everything before you eat it, and you will change how you think about food.
Don't save gratitude for treats, we should bring back the old tradition of giving thanks for each meal, and make time to consider how fortunate we are today. We take supermarkets for granted, with their endless shelves full of countless choices. We all know many don't have any choice, and feel grateful for anything at all to eat.
Once we can bring balance back to our food, and know we're making good choices for our health, not because it's the latest addictive, additive-packed product advertised on TV - we will feel better about ourselves.
Food is the most basic element for survival, but we have turned it into the reason why many lives are cut short. Prevention is always better than cure, and as we all know, cures aren't always possible, so I hope you'll choose healthier options the next time you go shopping. Feel grateful that food can keep you feeling good, and you'll find improved energy levels help you to keep making better choices.
The more you live with gratitude, the more in tune you become with your true self. We were born to love unconditionally, and live in peace and harmony. When you feel unhappy, or find that things aren't going your way, it's because you've moved away from living simply.

"Love and appreciation are identical vibrations. Appreciation is the vibration of alignment with who-you-are. Appreciation is the absence of everything that feels bad, and the presence of everything that feels good. When you focus upon what you want - when you tell the story of how you want your life to be - you will come closer and closer to the vicinity of appreciation, and when you reach it, it will pull you toward all things that you consider to be good in a very powerful way." ~ Abraham-Hicks
"Look for good things about where you are, and in your state of appreciation, you lift all self-imposed limitations (and all limitations are self-imposed) and you free yourself for the receiving of wonderful things." ~ Abraham-Hicks
