Everything you feel stems from two emotions - fear or love. When you feel fear, negative thoughts take control which take you away from where you want to be. When you feel love there is no room for fear - so that is always your aim.
Two emotions can't exist at the same time - you always have a choice.
My focus on moving to have a sea view was so intense that I didn't let anything interfere with my vision - including the reality of living by the sea! As soon as I arrived and opened the balcony doors, full of excitement to finally see the ocean . . . I was surrounded by the noise of seagulls swooping and diving all around me. Ever since watching Hitchcock's film as a child I'd been terrified of birds, and couldn't bear them anywhere near me.
I had to make an instant decision - was I going to allow my fear of birds prevent me from living my dream, or was I going to accept them as part of my new life? I immediately sat on the balcony and laughed aloud as I watched the birds, and chose to focus on loving their grace and beauty. I'm on the top floor, and I don't even flinch as they come in to land on the roof, inches above my head.
Before, I wouldn't have believed it was possible to overcome this fear - but being happy was far too important to let fear get in the way. Now, I love trying to take photos of the seagulls, and thinking clearly without fear - I never knew one story where birds pecked someone to death!
Fear is the imagination racing away with the facts, and distorting them.
Becoming more in tune with your feelings allows you to stop fear as soon as you begin to feel anxious. You can collect ways to interrupt the pattern of fear - I recommend this breathing exercise which communicates with the brain, and calms your system down peacefully. You can practice slow breathing anywhere, and it acts quickly to give you the space to choose loving thoughts that make you feel better.
You don't have to tell yourself you feel amazing when you feel bad - that isn't true. Simply intend to detach yourself away from fear - becoming conscious of those first negative thoughts is a big achievement.
Don't fight your fear as resistance keeps the feeling with you. When you focus on deep breathing, you're placing your attention on your body. Allow your thoughts to flow freely - don't get impatient when they continue to feel bad. By focusing on breathing slowly you will notice that your tension gradually eases which makes you feel better.
By making feeling better your aim, you will always be reaching towards love, and away from fear. As soon as you practice loving yourself (see last week) you will know caring how you feel is the most important thing you can do.
Fear is the most destructive emotion on the planet, because it prevents rational thought by flooding your body with stress. Fear isn't reality - it's only your thoughts creating a situation that will never happen.
Releasing stress is the first step to release fear.
Whatever makes you feel good releases stress. Anything from laughing at a comedy to stroking your pet. Have a creative hobby as an outlet - it absorbs your mind completely, and doing something you love fills your spirit. You don't have to show anyone the results - express yourself freely, and enjoy how good that feels.
