I was told I couldn't sing when I was young, so I used to hide away in class and mime to the words. The one day I genuinely had a good excuse not to sing - when I had to sneeze - the teacher told me off for not singing! So I've always felt inhibited, even though I love music.
Finding songs that alter your mood is a great way to change how you feel really quickly. As soon as you smile and start moving to the rhythm, you've taken your mind off whatever made you feel down . . . and joining in, releasing your voice without caring what you sound like, makes you feel so much better.
Everyone has serious issues to contend with, and it really helps to set them aside for a few minutes, and just act silly. Being an adult shouldn't be all about being sensible, and making sure the bills are paid on time. Being able to laugh at yourself makes the ride through life much easier - so join me boogying on down to James Brown - "I feel good!".
Other songs to make you smile are:
"Walking on Sunshine" - Katrina and the Waves
"The Only Way Is Up" - Yazz
"Dancing In The Moonlight" - Toploader
These are upbeat and fun - please share songs that work to give you an instant boost.
"He who sings frightens away his ills." - Miguel de Cervantes
“Some days there won't be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.” - Emory Austin
“I have spent my days stringing and unstringing my instrument while the song I came to sing remains unsung.” - Rabindranath Tagore
